North Water Polynya Scientific Conference will bring together scientists working on the North Water Polynya Region to present recent research and to discuss status, trends and the future of the North Water Polynya as well as future research needs.

The North Water Polynya is a climate-sensitive area, and the potential alteration or disappearance of the polynya as a result of climate change has profound implications for the entire ecosystem, and the people living in the region.

The theme sessions will be the following:

Physical Oceanography and Climate Change

  • Sea Ice dynamics including the ice bridge formation
  • Glacier melt/freshwater runoff

Marine Biodiversity, Productivity and Food Web Studies

Populations of Marine Mammals, Birds and Fish 

  • Status and trends

Hunting and Fishing

  • Assessing sustainability of current use of living resources and new potentials


  • Sources, impacts and trends

 Potential Environmental Impact from Industrial Activities

  • Shipping
  • Mining
  • Oil and Gas
