Graduate Opportunities in Arctic Science
Applications are invited for graduate work at the Master’s and PhD level within the Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS) (http://umanitoba.ca/ceos/) at the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Funded student projects will augment work underway on the non-invasive quantification of the presence, amount, and movement of gases and liquids within Arctic sea ice and/or snow during formation, growth and/or melt. Student projects could also focus on the biological implications of these processes.
This research may span several scales from laboratory settings to mesocosm work at the Sea ice Environmental Research Facility (SERF) (http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/environment/departments/ceos/research/1428.html), to Arctic fieldwork. Students will benefit from the interdisciplinary nature of both their research projects and the work environment at CEOS and its affiliated facilities. The Arctic Science Partnership (http://asp-net.org) aids in international research collaborations and networking opportunities.
Successful Masters level applicants will have completed undergraduate degrees in Science, and will have preferably participated in some introduction to research through completion of a summer studentship or undergraduate thesis work. PhD applicants will hold a Masters degree and have a strong background in biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, or oceanography. Special consideration will be given to those candidates with field experience in the Arctic and with sea ice or snow, experience with sea ice algal biology, or with eddy covariance measurements.
Applicants should familiarize themselves with the entrance requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba before they apply. umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/index.html
Please send a cover letter outlining your experience, qualifications and research interests, a curriculum vita, and up-to-date transcripts via email to Ryan Galley (firstname.lastname@example.org) and Søren Rysgaard (email@example.com).
Applications will be reviewed as they are received.
